The Best Herbs to Grow Indoors

Some herbs are able to thrive in indoor environments. These are the ones you should choose to include in your own indoor herb garden.

Basil, oregano, mint, chives, sage, rosemary and thyme are all great options for growing inside. They are hearty, and can be planted at any time of the year when kept indoors. These herbs are really versatile and are sure to be used frequently in your home-cooked meals.

Proper Care for Indoor Herbs

Even if an herb is well-suited for growing inside, you need to know how to water it properly and position it to get enough sunshine.

Watering

Keeping your indoor plants properly watered is key to ensuring you produce healthy and viable herbs. Watering herbs correctly also means that they should be properly drained, too, as too much water can be an issue.

Use a saucer, liner or drain pan under the pot to catch water and protect your surface. A clay saucer lets moisture pass through, so opt for plastic, rubber or metal instead. Clay pots can also dry out very quickly, so they may not be ideal in warm-weather conditions.

When you first bring your plants home or plant seeds, it’s a good idea to keep the soil moist for a few days until you see new growth. After that, you can check the moisture regularly by sticking your finger one inch into the soil.

Herbs to keep on the dry side include savory, rosemary, thyme, oregano and sage. Mint, basil, parsley and lemon balm like the soil to stay moist, but not too wet.

Sunlight

Just like water, herbs depend on sunlight to grow properly. And also just like water, different herbs require different amounts of sun to reach their peak.

In general, indoor herb plants require around six hours of sunlight daily. The ideal place to get this amount of sunlight is in a south-facing window. For herbs that require less light, like mint, parsley and thyme, a west-facing window will work well.

You can tell if a plant is not getting enough light in several ways. If the plants are showing signs of poor growth, have stems that grow unusually long between leaf sets, have leaves that are smaller than usual, or feature stems or leaves that are abnormally pale, you might need to find more light for your herbs.

If your home doesn’t offer the right amount of sunlight, consider buying an indoor grow light, which mimics sunlight and is great for places that experience cold, dark winters. An indoor light means you can grow herbs year round in any room, making the process of growing much easier.
